    Winter in Lech am Arlberg

Anyone planning a ski holiday in Lech am Arlberg chooses between the village centre and the hamlets around it. Zug is the quiet option: a handful of houses in a side valley, and among them the BALMA. The base station of the Zuger Bergbahn is about a two minute walk from the house, and from there the lifts climb into the Ski Arlberg area with 305 kilometres of slopes, the largest connected ski area in Austria.

One practical note first, because every guest asks sooner or later: lift passes are sold at the Zuger Bergbahn base station and online. Ski room and ski service are part of the house.

This page is the entrance to our winter world. It gathers everything we have written about winter on the Arlberg: the ski area and the lift pass, the ski schools, the White Ring, mountain dining and the knowledge of snow and safety.

    Onto the Slopes

The White Ring is the circuit everything here revolves around: 22 kilometres, 5,500 metres of vertical, completed by Sepp Bildstein in 1957. Ride it and the ski area stops being a trail map and becomes a journey. For a first start or a final polish, eleven ski schools with more than a thousand instructors work in Lech and Zürs, from beginner courses to private off piste guides.

    Mountain Dining

A ski day on the Arlberg has a second half, and it happens at the hut. Our hut guide covers 23 huts in Lech and Zürs, from rustic Kaiserschmarrn to gourmet Alpine cuisine, each with the way to get there. If you want to explore the valley kitchen itself, the culinary world holds the whole line of the house.

    Understanding Snow

Snow here is not scenery, it is a subject. Our stories explain how snow forms and sounds, and tell the history of avalanche protection on the Arlberg, which turned catastrophe into a science. For the current situation, see the weather page.
